Greece was the second stop on my National Geographic trip. We traveled to the mountain town of Delphi, stayed in the center of Athens, and experienced Greek beach life. When most people dream of Greece, they imagine sparkling white buildings and pristine ocean views. Although this describes part of Greece, it isn’t the whole picture. Stepping foot in Athens was the first time I had actually experienced culture shock. I had never seen a city in such despair. Graffiti suffocated the buildings. Sleeping bags littered the sidewalks with people laying on them begging for money and food. That’s why I believe traveling is so important because it allows people to immerse themselves in a country instead of flipping through a travel magazine.
